Today we are remembering our great leader. He was the 11th president of India. He was a great teacher who inspired me and many students. Great Indian scientist Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam.

Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam
- Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam was an Indian aerospace scientist.
- He was born on October 15, 1931, in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu
- He was born into a modest Tamil Muslim family. His father was a boat owner
- Despite financial hardships, his family valued education.
- Studied physics and aerospace engineering.
- At ISRO, he was the project director for the SLV-3. This was India’s first satellite launch vehicle. He successfully placed the Rohini satellite in orbit in 1980.
- He became the chief executive of the Integrated Guided Missile Development Program (IGMDP). The program aimed to develop a range of missiles for India’s defense.
- Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam was deeply involved in India’s civilian space programme and military missile development efforts.
- He thus came to be known as the Missile Man of India for his work on the development of ballistic missile and launch vehicle technology He also played a pivotal organizational, technical, and political role in India’s Pokhran-II nuclear tests in 1998
- As President, he was known for his accessibility, often interacting with students and encouraging them to dream big.
- He proposed a vision for India to become a developed nation by 2020. He focused on areas like agriculture, technology, and healthcare.
- He emphasized the importance of education, urging young people to embrace scientific thinking and contribute to national development.
- Despite his fame, he lived a humble life, often traveling by public transport and enjoying interactions with ordinary people.
- He believed in the power of dreams, hard work, and perseverance, often quoting, “Dreams are not what you see in sleep; dreams are things that do not let you sleep.”.
- He died on July 27, 2015, and was mourned nationwide. He collapsed while lecturing at IIM Shillong, reflecting his lifelong commitment to education and mentoring.
- A.P.J. Abdul Kalam remains a symbol of innovation, resilience, and hope in India. His life story continues to inspire millions, making him a beloved figure not just in India but around the world. His emphasis on knowledge, ethics, and the importance of giving back to society serves as a guiding principle for many.
- The Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam National Memorial was built in memory of Kalam by the DRDO in Pei Karumbu, in the island town of Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu. It was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in July 2017.
- The Tamil Nadu state government announced that his birthday, 15 October, would be observed across the state as “Youth Renaissance Day“
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi ceremonially released postage stamps commemorating Kalam at DRDO Bhawan in New Delhi on 15 October 2015, the 84th anniversary of Kalam’s birth World Students Day is celebrated today, on October 15 that marks the birth anniversary of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. The day was first celebrated in 2010 to honor the students for their hard work and determination The UN had declared Dr APJ Abdul Kalam birthday as the World Students’ Day The theme of World Students Day – this year is “Empowering Students to be Agents of Change“
- Dr A.P.J Abdul Kalam passed away on July 27,2015 but no one will ever forget his contributions to science,technology,education and development in India.

- He received 8 honorary doctorates from 40 universities.
- Padma Bhushan in 1981.
- Padma Vibhushan in 1990 – for his work with ISRO and DRDO and his role as a scientific advisor to the Government.
- Bharat Ratna in 1997 – India’s highest civilian honor.
- In 1998, Veer Savarkar Award from government of India.
- In 2000, Ramanujan Award from Alwars Research Center, Chennai.
- In 2007, King Charles II Medal from Royal Society, UK.
- In 2008 Kalam was the recipient of Hoover Medal.
- In 2013, he was the recipient of the Von Braun Award from the National Space Society – to recognize excellence in the management and leadership of a space-related project.
