Microsoft Teams Upgrade Alert: Deadline for Classic Teams End of Support and Availability

Today I am sharing important reminder.
REMINDER – Microsoft Teams – Classic Microsoft Teams end of support.
Details – End of support for Microsoft Classic Teams
- Classic Microsoft Teams support will end on July 1, 2024. (excluding VDI – “Virtualized Desktop Infrastructure” and Government cloud customers)
- The end of support for the classic Teams client in VDI starts October 1, 2024.
- After July 1, 2024 – users who still running classic Teams will experience in-app messages informing them that the client is no longer supported. These messages are dismissible but will reappear periodically.
- Classic Teams will be unavailable on certain OS from October 23, 2024, and for all users by July 1, 2025.
Classic Teams end of availability
- Starting October 23, 2024, the classic Teams desktop app on Windows 7, 8, 8.1, and Mac OS Sierra (10.12) will reach end of availability.
- After that date, users will not be able to access the classic Teams desktop app on these operating systems.
- Users will experience non-dismissible in-app messages informing them about end of availability, with an option to use the new Teams web app on supported browsers as an alternative.
- Starting July 1, 2025, classic Teams desktop app will reach end of availability for all users. The new Teams web app will be available on supported browsers as an alternative.
Action need to be taken
- Users should update their OS and Teams client to avoid disruptions.
- Update operating system: Users running classic Teams Windows desktop on Windows 10 version that is less than 10.0.19041 including LTSC (Long term servicing channel) or running macOS versions on Big Sur(11) or lower should work on updating their OS as soon as possible.
- Microsoft recommends updating to Windows 11 and macOS Sonoma (version 14).
- VDI Customers should plan to update to Windows Server 2019 (10.0.17763) or Windows Server 2022 (10.0.20348) or higher to get started on their new Teams journey.
Prerequisites for target computers – For new Teams to be successfully installed, computers must meet the minimum requirements mentioned below.

| Classic Teams app | Version 1.6.00.4472 or later to see the Try the new Teams toggle. Important: Classic Teams is only a requirement if you want users to be able to switch between classic Teams and new Teams. This prerequisite is optional if you only want your users to see the new Teams client. |
| Office | Microsoft 365 Apps or Office LTSC 2021 Learn more: Office versions and connectivity to Microsoft 365 services |
| Settings | Turn on the “Show Notification Banners” setting in System > Notifications > Microsoft Teams to receive Teams Notifications. |
| Webview2 | Update to the most current version. Learn more: Enterprise management of WebView2 Runtimes |
| Delivery optimization (DO) | DO powers Teams automatic updates, which are required as part of the Servicing Agreement. |
Important Notes
- What is mean by End of Support – Microsoft will no longer provide updates or new features for the client, nor will help resolve support issues with the classic Teams client.
- What is mean by End of Availability – After the deadline, the client will stop working and users will no longer be able to do work in the classic Teams client.
