Mastering Complex Subjects with the Feynman Technique
Hi All,
Greetings for the day!!!
Today discussing one of the most important technique to understand complex subject, to learn easily, more faster from great physician, Nobel prize winner – Richard Feynman
The person who says he knows what he thinks but cannot express it usually does not know what he thinks.
– Mortimer Adler
Feynman Technique
- Feynman technique is one of the most effective method to develop intense understanding of any complex topic or subject.
- We can use Feynman technique to learn new concepts quickly, to study more effectively.
- Feynman technique is also useful for those who have writing as challenge – he choose to use speech for his work.
Nobody ever figures out what life is all about, and it doesn’t matter. Explore the world. Nearly everything is really interesting if you go into it deeply enough
– Richard P. Feynman

- Feynman technique comprises 4 simple following steps.
You have no responsibility to live up to what other people think you ought to accomplish. I have no responsibility to be like they expect me to be. It’s their mistake, not my failing.
– Richard P. Feynman
Step 1 – Pick a topic and study it properly.
- Most important point – select the topic which you want to understand.
- Write the details about topic on paper – write down everything you know about the topic
- If new source of topic found add them into the notes.
- Try to write in simple and plain terms.
Step 2 – Explain the topic to someone like a child or a non familiar , and explain in that way that if he/she is 5 -12 years old child.
- Can we explain the respective topic to non-familiar person or in between 5-12 year child.
- Since we are explaining the person who do not know anything about subject – try to make it as simple as possible. So that it would be explained very well.
Step 3 – Identify any gaps or any mistake. ( For e.g. if you are stuck in between )
- Find out the gaps in explanation – areas where we struggle to explain, if we forgot something important to explain, or something we are not able to explain.
- Go back to topic – source material, simplify and explain it again.
- This should be continuous process unless we explain everything which we want to learn.
Step 4 – Return to the topic again - Review and Simplify
- As we now simplified version of our topics, organize them well in narrative way
- Read it loud
- If still some confusion – go back to step 2
- Revisit the notes on regular basis
The highest forms of understanding we can achieve are laughter and human compassion.
– Richard P. Feynman
