Getting Started with Microsoft Purview

On Knowledge-Junction we are starting to explore Microsoft Purview. We will have series of articles starting with basics to advanced features of Microsoft Purview. Today first article in the series, starting with Purview basics.
What is Microsoft Purview?
- Microsoft Purview is Set of solutions / tools / services to help organizations to
- Govern
- Protect and
- Manage data wherever it is located
- Microsoft Purview helps organizations to
- Classify,
- Protect, and
- Monitor sensitive data across cloud, endpoint, and AI environments
- Microsoft Purview combines
- Classification,
- Labeling, and
- Protection across Microsoft 365 services.

Why Microsoft Purview
- Data governance is very important for every organization
- To have effective data governance plan in place we must know
- What data is available
- What sensitive or personal information my data contains
- Either we are data consumer (data analyst, data scientist, or data engineer) or producer, we need to spend quite good amount of time on manual processes like to annotate, catalogue or to find trusted data source
- Creating documentation for data sources can be difficult, and it’s an ongoing responsibility to keep documentation in sync with data sources

- The Microsoft Purview portal provides access to
- data governance,
- data security, and
- risk and compliance solutions.
- The unified experience streamlines navigation for all Purview solutions
- Provides a single-entry point for settings, search, and roles and permissions management

Licenses requirement for Microsoft Purview?
- To use Microsoft Purview, we will generally need a Microsoft 365 E5 or equivalent license, or a separate Microsoft Purview subscription.
- Microsoft Purview is available through two Microsoft 365 plans:
- E3 and
- E5.
- Actually specific license requirement depends on the Purview feature we are using
