Today sharing new MAJOR UPDATE about Microsoft Purview and SharePoint Online

MAJOR UPDATE: SharePoint online information management and in-place records management features retirement

DETAILS:

• From April 2026, SharePoint online will retire the features below
  • Information management policies
  • In-Place record management
  • Document deletion policies (deletion only)
  • Policies for site closure and deletion (deletion only)
• These features will not be accessible
• These features will no longer supported by Microsoft
• These features may disappear from the user interface (UI)
• For these features configurations will not be available through UI or programmatically (including enable/disable actions)
• Backend services supporting these behaviors may stop functioning

Alternate Options / Solution:

Migrate to

• Microsoft Purview Data Lifecycle Management and
• Purview Records Management

Please refer migration guides specified in REFERENCES section

Microsoft recommend using Microsoft Purview Data Lifecycle Management. They also recommend Purview Records Management. Microsoft continue to invest in modern, flexible compliance solutions.
