M365 – SharePoint Online: List Creation from UI – New options available – From Existing List

Hi All,
In last article we discussed the new options available and one of those we discussed is – M365 – SharePoint Online: List Creation from UI – New options available – From Excel
In this article we will discuss one more new option available – Creating List from existing list.
One more important point I forgot to mention in last article is these new list creation options currently are available only when we create new list from site content page as
Figure 1: M365 >> SharePoint Online >> New list creation options currently are available only from Site Content page
So when we click on “+ New >> List” new options are available for creating list as
Figure 2: M365 >> SharePoint Online >> New options while creating list from site content page
In last article we created list “From Excel”, today we will create a list “From an existing list” option.
As we click on “From an existing list” option on the same dialog / bar we get the list of Site Collections under “Select a site” label, default first Site Collection (current site) selected and all the available lists under “Choose a list from Swedish (this site)” label from which we can create a new list as
Figure 3: M365 >> SharePoint Online >> Creating a new list “From an existing list” option
If we see in above Figure 3, we need to
- Specify list name, here we specified -“EmployeeCopy”
- We need to select a site – here we selected site with title “Swedish” – which is actually current site
- In the next tab it shows all the lists available from the selected site – here we have selected “Employee” list
- So basically we are creating copy of “Employee” list from “Swedish” site
One important point here to highlight is only “Columns, views and formatting will copy, list settings are not get copied“
Once we clicked on the “Create” button at bottom, list is get created as

Figure 4: M365 >> SharePoint Online >> New list is created “From an existing list”
From the above figure 4 custom columns like “Emp” also get created. If we go to list settings will see all the columns, views copied but not the list settings like “Allow content types”, “Requires content approval” and so on.
We will stop here. MS bring out these very good options. Please try it out.
