Microsoft 365 – SharePoint Online – resolving error – Could not publish your page – We are sorry. we encountered an unexpected error. Please refresh the page and try again

Greetings for the day!!! Today new issue and solution, small article but sharing, could save your time while finding the solution for such kind of errors

Background / Details

• We have a modern SharePoint communication site
• One of user from our organization created a modern page for one of our requirement
• The respective user left the organization and page is checked out to the user
• So one of my team member went, did discard the checkout
• As my team member edits the page and try to either “Save as draft” or “Republish“, he is not able to do so. Getting an error

Issue / Error

Could not publish your page – We are sorry. we encountered an unexpected error. Please refresh the page and try again

Solution

• After bit looking / googling it found that, the user who created the page and left the organization is “Author” for the page
• Though we discarded checkout, but it dose not allow the page to save or publish, as we removed the respective users email address from “Author” section, we are successfully save / republish the page
• There are different causes also for this kind of error – check for page name – in case any special character in page name it breaks the page

Here the governance plays important role – users who left the organization get removed from the AD but it remains in SharePoint. So cleanup of such users is very necessary
