Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan
- Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was an Indian philosopher, statesman, and educator. He served as the Second President of India from 1962 to 1967.
- He was also the First Vice President from 1952 to 1962.
- As a president he just accepted 2500 salary out of 10,000. He donated the rest to Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund every month.
- He was a world-renowned academic. He earned respect as a “bridge-builder” between Indian and Western philosophy. He was notable for introducing Indian thought to the West.
- He was also a distinguished scholar and educator who believed in the transformative power of education.
- We celebrate Teachers’ Day on Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan’s birthday, September 5, because he humbly asked his students and friends to observe the day as a tribute to all teachers, when once his students asked to celebrate his birthday.
- His deep respect for the teaching profession and belief that “teachers should be the best minds in the countryled to this day being set aside to honor educators for their profound impact on society.
- We are celebrating Teachers’ day since 1962. The first teacher’s day was celebrated on 5th September 1962.
- National Teachers Awards are given on this day to teachers by the President of India. The award is given as public gratitude to the teachers working in primary schools, middle schools, and secondary schools.
- He was nominated for the Nobel Prize 27 times, including 16 times for literature and 11 times for the Nobel Peace Prize.
- He died on 1975 in Chennai. He is one of the founder of HelpAge India, a non-profit organization for elderly unprivileged in India.
- In remembrance of Dr. Radhakrishnan, Oxford University started the Radhakrishnan Chevening Scholarships and the Radhakrishnan Memorial Award

- The Philosophy of Rabindranath Tagore (1918): Radhakrishnan’s first book. This work explores the philosophy of Rabindranath Tagore, the renowned Indian poet and polymath.
- The Reign of Religion in Contemporary Philosophy (1920): This is his second book. It critiques the influence of religious biases. These biases affect contemporary philosophical thought.
- Indian Philosophy (1923, 1927): This comprehensive work is in two volumes. It is considered a definitive text on the history of Indian philosophy. The book introduced Indian philosophy to the Western world.
- The Dhammapada (1950): An edition of the Buddhist text with an introductory essay, translation, and notes.
- The Brahma Sutra: The Philosophy of Spiritual Life (1960): This work explores the Brahma Sutras. It is a foundational text of the Vedanta school of philosophy.
- The Principal Upanishads (1953) contains his own introductory essay, translation, and commentary.
