About Lal Bahadur Shastri Ji
- Lal Bahadur Shastri was born on 2 October 1904, in Mughalsarai, Uttar Pradesh.
- He was born to Sharad Prasad Srivastava and Ramdulari Devi.
- Lal Bahadur Shastri earned his title of “Shastri” (scholar) after graduating from Kashi Vidyapeeth. He was known for his integrity, coining the slogan “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan” (Hail the soldier, hail the farmer).
- He was the first to appoint female bus conductors.
- He supported the “Green Revolution” to boost food production
- He initiated the “White Revolution” to increase milk production, supporting the Amul cooperative and creating the National Dairy Development Board.
- He resigned from his post as Railway Minister, taking responsibility for a railway accident despite not being directly involved.
- He was the first person to be awarded the Bharat Ratna posthumously.
- Lal Bahadur Shastri ji was Prime Minister of India from 1964 to 1966.
- As a Prime Minister, he secured a bank loan to buy a car, demonstrating his frugality.
- He served as Home Minister from 1961 to 1963.
- He is popularly known as the ‘Man of Peace‘.
- His thoughts were influenced by reading about Swami Vivekananda, Mahatma Gandhi, and Annie Besant.
- He was deeply impressed and influenced by Mahatma Gandhi, he joined the Indian Independence movement in the 1920s.
- He served as president of Servants of the People Society (Lok Sevak Mandal). It was founded by Lala Lajpat Rai. He also held prominent positions in the Indian National Congress.
- After independence in 1947, he joined the Indian government.
- He became one of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s key cabinet colleagues. First, he served as Railways Minister (1951–56). Then, he held many other prominent positions, including the Home Minister.
- He had an extensive personal library and was an avid reader. Books were his constant companions, even during his tenure as Prime Minister.
- Lal Bahadur Shastri threw himself into the struggle for freedom with feverish energy.
- He led many defiant campaigns and spent a total of seven years in British jails.
- It was in the fire of this struggle that his steel was tempered and he grew into maturity.
