Today we are celebrating Good Governance Day. We celebrate Good Governance Day on December 25 every year. This is in honor of the birth anniversary of Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee
- He was born on December 25, 1924, in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh to Shri Krishna Bihari Vajpayee and Smt. Krishna Devi
- He was an Indian poet, writer and a statesman.
- He served as the prime minister of India, first for a term of 13 days in 1996, then for a period of 13 months from 1998 to 1999, followed by a full term from 1999 to 2004.
- He was the first non-Congress prime minister to serve a full term in the office. Vajpayee was one of the co-founders and a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
- He was elected to the 5th, 6th and 7th Lok Sabha and again to the 10th, 11th 12th and 13th Lok Sabha and to Rajya Sabha in 1962 and 1986.
- In 2004, he was elected to Parliament from Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh for the five times consecutively.
- Atal Bihari Vajpayee was jailed multiple times, notably for over 19 months during the 1975-77 Emergency imposed by Indira Gandhi, and briefly as a teenager for participating in the 1942 Quit India Movement, where he wrote poetry in prison.
- He spent time in Bengaluru Central Jail during the Emergency, later being moved to a hospital due to ill health, and was known as the “prisoner poet” for his writings from jail.
- Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s government conducted the Pokhran-II nuclear tests (Operation Shakti) in May 1998, a series of five underground detonations at the Pokhran Test Range, declaring India a nuclear weapon state, a significant move following the first test in 1974. Under immense secrecy, involving key figures like A.P.J.
- Abdul Kalam and Rajagopala Chidambaram, India demonstrated advanced fission and fusion capabilities, prompting global shock, sanctions from the US and others, but also reinforcing national pride and security in the face of regional threats, especially from Pakistan.

Awards given to Atal Bihari Vajpayee
- Bharat Ratna (2015): India’s highest civilian award for his exceptional service to the nation.
- Padma Vibhushan (1992): India’s second-highest civilian award for distinguished service in public affairs.
- Best Parliamentarian Award (1994): Recognized his exemplary conduct and oratory in Parliament.
- Lokmanya Tilak Award (1994): Honored his leadership and contributions to national development.
- Pt. Govind Ballabh Pant Award (1992): Acknowledged his literary contributions and efforts in strengthening democracy.
- Honorary Doctorates: Received an Honorary Doctorate of Philosophy from Kanpur University (1993).
International Recognition:
- Bangladesh Liberation Honour (2021, posthumous): Awarded by Bangladesh for his support during the 1971 war for independence.
