  • Teachers Day is celebrated on September 5th in honor of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, who was a great teacher, philosopher, and the second President of India.
  • Teachers Day has been celebrated in India since 1962. The first official Teachers Day was held on September 5, 1962, in honor of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.
  • When Dr. Radhakrishnan became the President, his students wanted to celebrate his birthday. However, he requested that instead of celebrating his birthday, they should observe September 5th as Teachers’ Day to honor all teachers.
  • Since then, this day is celebrated across India with great enthusiasm.
  • The celebration aimed to recognize and appreciate the contributions of teachers to the education and development of students and society as a whole.

  • Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was born on 5 September 1888 at Tartini in Tamil Nadu
  • One of the most renowned writer in India
  • Vice chancellor of Andhra University – 1931 – 1936
  • Vice-Chancellor at Banaras Hindu University – 1949 – 1948
  • He was elected to the Constituent Assembly in 1946.
  • Chancellor at Delhi University – 1953 – 1962
  • He served as the ambassador to UNESCO and later to Moscow
  • Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was first vice president of India become in 1952. As a president he just accepted 2500 salary out of 10,000 and rest he donated to Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund every month
  • Second president of India become in 1962.
  • He is one of the founder of HelpAge India, a non-profit organization for elderly unprivileged in India.
  • World Teachers’ Day is celebrated on every 5th of October because the signing of the 1966 UNESCO/ILO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, which set benchmarks regarding the rights and responsibilities of teachers, and standards for their preparation and continuing education.
  • Students often organize events, perform skits, and express their gratitude through cards, gifts, and speeches. In some schools, senior students take on the role of teachers for the day, which adds a fun element to the celebration.

Instead of celebrating my birthday, it would be my proud privilege if 5 September is observed as Teachers’ Day – Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan

  • Bharat Ratana – highest civilian award in India – in 1954
  • The Peace Prize of the German Book Trade – in 1961
  • The Templeton prize for promoting the notion of “a universal reality of God that embraced love and wisdom for all people” – in 197. He donated his Templeton Prize money to the Oxford University.
  • He was nominated for the Nobel Prize 27 times, including 16 times for literature and 11 times for the Nobel Peace Prize.
  • He also got German Book Trade Peace Prize.
  • In 1963, he was awarded with the Order of Merit award.
