Kerala Sāmbhar – Ammachi Special

A doorbell rang and the neighbours, attracted by the fine smell, asked Ammachi about recipe for her delicious Sambhar. Super-tasty Sambhar with all the flavours vegetables and spices. That day I decided to write down her favourite recipes in a blog. Let everyone enjoy the taste of appetizing Sambhar.

Grand children in Kerala call their grandmother as ‘Ammachi’ or ‘Ammama’ in Malayalam. Yes she is my daughter’s Ammachi.

I always try to write using less text and more images because visuals are processed 60,000 times faster than text. And I believe that text-based communication’s life is lesser then visuals-based information.

Here I am starting with :-

Sambhar Masala Powder.

Quantity.

  • ½ cup or 40 grams coriander seeds (sabut/akhaa dhania)
  • 16 to 18 dry red chilies (sookhi lal mirch)
  • 1.5 teaspoon fenugreek seeds (methi seeds)
  • 2 tablespoon chana dal
  • 1 tablespoon urad dal
  • 1/3 cup curry leaves (kadi patta)
  • 1/2 tablespoon mustard seeds (rai) (Optional)
  • 1/2 tablespoon asafoetida (hing)
  • Salt as per taste

Once, cooled, grind this roasted spice mixture in the grinder.
