Oil Paintings – Winds of Change

In this article I will tell you about Oil paints and difference between “Oil paint and Acrylic paint”.

At first glance Acrylic and Oil painting may seems alike, but this is not the case. Non-painters will usually have a hard time distinguishing between acrylic and oil paints. Many artists feel that painting with acrylic paint is much easier to work with because it dries very quickly, and it is easier to handle and clean up, as you only need soap and water. This article will help artist in choosing accurate paint type for painting desired project.

Although, I also believe that acrylic paint is much more suitable for beginners because it dries very quickly, and they get result faster in less sittings. But, the beauty of oil paint is opposite to acrylic, is its flexibility and incredible scope for doing experiments. There are benefits and drawbacks to both oil and acrylic paints. I suggest that you experiment with both acrylic and oil paints to figure out what you like best. The tools, techniques and principles of painting are the same for both oil and acrylic paints, except paint.
Oil paints are made of ground pigments suspended in a drying oil (like linseed). As we know, oil and water don’t mix! Oil paints must be thinned and cleaned with oil-based products or solvents.

If you are doing landscape, portrait or figure painting, oil paint possibly will work best for you. Acrylic is great for abstract and graphic work. It is used by many contemporary artists.

Let’s look as comparison chart between toothpaste and mayonnaise 🙂. It would be much easier to understand if you have gone through my previous articles. Still I have tried my best to write it in more descriptive manner.

Always keep in mind that drying time most influencing aspects of painting. Mixing acrylics is more difficult than mixing oils, simply because the acrylics are already beginning to dry.
Tips for Oil Painting: –

• Keep Mayonnaise-like consistency.
• Hold your brush at the end for maximum control
• Vary your brush pressure
• Keep your colors pure
• Keep your brushes clean so you don’t spoil your color, especially during blending.
• Keep fewer colors in mixing
• Keep brush dry for wet-on-wet
• Needs more patience compare to acrylic painting.

There is no harm in doing oil over acrylic paint is dried completely. But, remember reverse is a disaster.

Happy Paintings!
