Microsoft Azure DevOps – Deleting and Recovering Organization

Background: We have started discussing Azure DevOps. In last two articles of Azure DevOps we discussed
In this article we will move ahead and will discuss deletion and recovery of Microsoft Azure DevOps Organization.

How to delete Azure DevOps Organization :
- As discussed in last article, from Organization Settings Overview page – https://dev.azure.com/<organization name>/_settings/organizationOverview we could delete the organization as shown in below fig

- Once we clicked on “Delete” button as shown in above Fig, we will have “Delete organization” dialog as shown in below Fig

- On “Delete organization” dialog, we need to enter our organization name to enable the “Delete” button as shown in above fig
- Once we delete organization, we can recover it within 28 days but after 28 days organization and respective data will be deleted permanently.
- Also on delete organization we will be redirected to devops page – https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/services/devops/
What happen when we delete Azure DevOps Organization :
- All users access get removed from all organization services and resources
- URL of the organization is available to use. For example in our case if delete current organization – prashamsabadra then this organization name is available to use. It might take some time to get available organization name approximate around an hour
- Deleted organization get disabled immediately but shows in our visual studio profile for next 28 days
Permission require to delete organization : To delete organization we need Project Collection Administrator rights
How to recover deleted Azure DevOps organization :
- Login to our Visual Studio profile page – https://app.vsaex.visualstudio.com/me
- Once we logged in successfully we will have profile page as shown in below fig

- From the above fig there is option like – “Organization Pending Deletion – Expand“
- Click on “Expand” link we will get an option to restore the organization as shown in below fig

- Once we clicked on “Restore” link, we will have “Restore Organization” dialog as shown in below fig

- Click on “Restore” button from the “Restore Organization” dialog and our deleted organization will be restored successfully 🙂
- Once our organization is restored successfully, we will receive an email as well as –

- Email contains various details and links such as – Link to our Azure DevOps organization, Option to add users, our organization details and link to subscribe
Permissions require to restore Azure DevOps organization : To restore organization we need organization owner permission
