Today is Good Governance Day. It is celebrated on December 25th and honors the legacy of Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

  1. Atal Bihari Vajpayee was born in Gwalior, India on December 25, 1924
  2. Atal Bihari Vajpayee (25 December 1924 – 16 August 2018) was an Indian politician, statesman and poet.
  3. Vajpayeeji who served as the prime minister of India, first for a term of 13 days in 1996. Then for 13 months from 1998 to 1999, followed by a full term from 1999 to 2004.
  4. He was the first non-Congress prime minister to serve a full term in the office.
  5. He was one of the co-founders and a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party.
  6. He was also a Hindi poet, magnificent orator and a writer.
  7. He served in the Indian Parliament for over five decades. He was elected ten times to the Lok Sabha. He also served twice in the Rajya Sabha.
  8. He served as a Member of Parliament from the Lucknow constituency.
  9. Vajpayeeji retired from active politics in 2009 due to health concerns. He was among the founding members of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh (BJS).
  10. He was president of BJS from 1968 to 1972.
  11. In March 1977, Vajpayeeji became the Minister of External Affairs in the cabinet of Prime Minister Morarji Desai.
  12. Atal Bihari Vajpayeeji is the first president of Bharatiya Janata Party.
  13. During his tenure as prime minister, India carried out the Pokhran nuclear tests in 1998.

  1. Remembering Vajpayee, Dr. Kasturirangan, ISRO Chief at the time of the mission showed a glimpse of Atal’s Sanskrit proficiency when he changed the name of the mission from Somayaan to Chandrayaan.
  2. “Mr Vajpayee said the mission should be called Chandrayaan, and not Somayaan. The country has emerged as an economic power. It will make many exploratory journeys to the Moon.”
  3. The veteran BJP leader was diabetic and had one functional kidney.
  4. He had suffered a stroke in 2009 that weakened his cognitive abilities.
  5. He was the first person to deliver a speech in Hindi at United Nations.
  6. In 2015, he was honored with India’s highest civilian honorBharat Ratna.
