Microsoft Power Platform admin center

At Microsoft Power Platform, we’re special because of Azure Active Directory. When our Power Platform Admins log in through Azure AD, we get full control to run, automate, check, and handle the whole platform.
Think of our admin center as the superhero hub for Power Apps, Power Automate, and Dynamics 365 apps. Here’s what it lets us do:
- Environments: Make, manage, and adjust settings for different places.
- Analytics: See detailed info about Dataverse like active users, API calls, and more.
- Data Integration: Easily add data into Dataverse from places like Finance, Operation, and Dynamics 365 sales.
- Data Gateways: Smoothly move data between on-premises servers and the Power Platform.
- Data Policies: Keep our organization safe by setting rules for Power Apps. Make sure data is managed well and doesn’t accidentally leak to social media. Our admin center helps us control these rules at the environment level, keeping our business secure.
In short, the Power Platform Admin Center is our handy tool for handling and securing our Power Platform journey.
Who Can Create Environments?
The ability to create environments in Power Platform depends on the user’s license. Global admins and Power Platform admins have the privilege to create environments. The necessary licenses for environment creation vary based on the type of environment, be it trial, production, or developer. Users can check their license status in the Microsoft 365 admin center and assign licenses accordingly.
Creating an Environment: Step-by-Step Guide

- Check Your License:

- Ensure that our license aligns with the requirements for environment creation.
- Sign In:
- Access the Microsoft 365 admin center and sign in with our credentials.
- Navigate to Power Platform Admin Center:
- Locate and click on “Environments” within the Power Platform admin center.
- Create Environment:
- Follow on-screen instructions to create an environment, choosing whether to include a database.
- Storage Capacity:

- Confirm that there is sufficient storage, particularly for production and sandbox environments.
- Confirm Tenant Policy:

- Ensure that our organization permits environment creation by checking the settings in the Power Platform admin center under “Control who can create and manage environments.”
Why Create an Environment with a Database?

Now, let’s explore the choices we make during the environment creation process:
- Adding Dynamics 365 Apps:
- Opt for a production or sandbox environment with a database to include powerful apps like Dynamics 365 Sales and Field Service right from the start.
- No Going Back:
- Importantly, if we decide not to enable Dynamics 365 apps during the initial setup, we can’t change our minds later. We also won’t be able to install these apps on that environment afterward.
- License Needed:
- To enable Dynamics 365 apps, we need the right license, specifically a Dynamics 365 license. This ensures we have the proper permissions to use these applications.
- About Dataverse:
- Dataverse is like a powerful cloud-based database. It’s not just for storing data but also for implementing business rules and automation. We might want to use it if we need these advanced capabilities.
Why Create an Environment Without a Database?
- No Need for Dynamics 365 Apps:
- If we don’t need Dynamics 365 apps or don’t plan to use Dataverse, and we’re creating things like canvas apps or flows using different data sources, it’s fine to skip the Dataverse database.
- Decision is Permanent:
- Once we’ve created an environment without enabling Dynamics 365 apps, we can’t change our minds later. The decision is final, so make sure we choose what suits our needs right from the start.
- Dynamics 365 Apps and Trial Environments:
- Unfortunately, if we’re using a trial environment, we can’t enable Dynamics 365 apps on it. Trial environments have some restrictions, and this is one of them.
- If we’ve recently deleted or made changes to an environment, we can’t use its URL again until at least 24 hours have passed. This is to ensure everything gets properly updated and cleared.
In a nutshell, if we want the fancy Dynamics 365 apps, decide early. If we don’t need them, go for a simpler setup. And remember, once we make a decision, especially about Dynamics 365 apps, it’s set in stone, so choose wisely!
Creating an Environment with a Database:
Why do this?
If we want to use Dataverse as a smart way to securely store data for our Power Apps.
Prerequisites:
Make sure we have 1 GB available for the database.
Steps:
- Sign In:

- Go to the Power Platform admin center.
- Use an admin account (like Dynamics 365 admin, Global admin, or Microsoft Power Platform admin).
- Navigate to Environments:

- Find and click on “Environments.”
- Start a New Environment:
- Choose “New.”
- Enter Details:

- Give our environment a Name.
- Pick a Region (where it’s located).
- Choose the Type (production, trial, or sandbox).
- Describe the Purpose of the environment.
- Add Dataverse Database:
- Select “Yes” for “Add a Dataverse data store.”
- Azure Subscription (Optional):
- If we want to link to Azure to pay for services, select “Yes” for “Pay-as-you-go with Azure.”
- More Details:

- Fill in Language, URL (unique for our organization), and Base Currency.
- Security Group:

- Choose a security group to control access. For open access, select “None.”
- Enable Dynamics 365 Apps:

- If we want to use apps like Dynamics 365 Sales, select “Yes” for “Enable Dynamics 365 apps.”
- We need the right license for Dynamics 365.
- Sample Apps and Data (Optional):
- Select “Yes” if we want sample apps and data for learning.
- Save:
- Click “Save.”
Creating an Environment without a Database:
Why do this?
If we don’t need Dataverse or Dynamics 365 apps and we want to use our own data store.
Prerequisites:
Make sure we have 1 GB available for the database.
Steps:
- Sign In:

- Go to the Power Platform admin center.
- Use an admin account (like Dynamics 365 admin, Global admin, or Power Platform admin).
- Navigate to Environments:

- Find and click on “Environments.”
- Start a New Environment:
- Choose “New.”
- Enter Details:

- Give our environment a Name.
- Pick a Region (where it’s located).
- Choose the Type (production or trial).
- Describe the Purpose of the environment.
- Skip Dataverse Database:
- Select “No” for “Add a Dataverse data store.”
- Azure Subscription (Optional):
- If we want to link to Azure to pay for services, select “Yes” for “Pay-as-you-go with Azure.”
- Save:
- Click “Save.”
That’s it! We’ve created environments, one with Dataverse for advanced data storage, and one without for simpler needs. Choose the one that fits our project.
Conclusion:
As we conclude, let’s reflect: crafting our Power Platform setup is like tailoring a unique solution for our organization. Whether we opted for the advanced Dataverse or kept it straightforward, we’ve taken a crucial step together. Here’s to our success in the realm of Microsoft Power Platform! Let’s keep powering up with robust solutions, well-managed data, and smooth automation. Happy Power Platforming, everyone!
