Hi All,

Greetings for the day 🙂 LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL 🙂 I hope we all are safe 🙂 STAY SAFE, STAY HEALTHY 🙂

As I am preparing for the exam SC – 300, I am keep sharing the study material 🙂

In last two article Preparing exam SC – 300 – Identity and Access Administrator – Associate Configure and manage Azure Active Directory roles – Study material – Part 1 and Preparing exam SC – 300 – Identity and Access Administrator – Associate Configure and manage custom Azure Active Directory roles – Study material – Part 2 we discussed about – What are Azure AD Roles, how to assign those roles to the user, creating custom Azure role definition, assigning the custom role to the user from Azure Active Directory admin center portal

In this article we will proceed further and will discuss how to configure and manage custom domains from Azure Active Directory admin center portal

If you still didn’t got a chance to go through last articles please have a look once

So LETS BEGIN THE FUN 🙂

Only Global Administrator can manage domains in Azure AD

When we create organization initial / primary domain name is set. Here in our case its knowledgejunction1.onmicrosoft.com as in below fig

Configure and manage custom domains – Azure Active Directory admin center – primary domain - when organization is created
fig : Configure and manage custom domains – Azure Active Directory admin center – primary domain – when organization is created
  • This primary domain is default domain when we create a new user
  • For ex – in our tenant its – prasham@knowledgejunction1.onmicrosoft.com
  • We could also check primary domain from domains blade or page as
Configure and manage custom domains – Azure Active Directory admin center – domains blades - custom domain name - lists available primary domain
fig : Configure and manage custom domains – Azure Active Directory admin center – domain blades – custom domain name – lists available primary domain

Prerequisites Adding custom domain:

  • We need to have our custom domain
  • Once custom domain is added to the Azure AD, we need to go back to domain registrar and need to add the Azure DNS information. We need to create new TXT record (Azure gives us TXT OR MX record details) for our domain
  • Some domain registrar dosent support TXT record, we can use MX record

NOTE : Here, as we have local tenant we dont have actual domain registered with Domain Registrar. So here I’ll just explain the required steps

Steps for Adding custom domain:

  • From custom domain blade we can add custom domain. We could navigate to custom domain blade by left side pane as shown in below fig
  • From the “Domains” blade click on “+ Add custom domain” link
Configure and manage custom domains – Azure Active Directory admin center – Adding custom domain
fig : Configure and manage custom domains – Azure Active Directory admin center – Adding custom domain
  • Once we clicked on “+ Add custom domain” link, right side panel will open to enter the custom domain as shown in below fig
  • Please have a look at tip as well – “To add a domain you must already have a domain name and have the necessary sign-in credentials to update the DNS records with your domain name registrar
  • Here we are giving name – knowledgejunction1.in (just to test)
Configure and manage custom domains – Azure Active Directory admin center – Adding custom domain
fig : Configure and manage custom domains – Azure Active Directory admin center – Adding custom domain
  • Once our custom domain added successfully, we could see the message “Domain name added” as shown in below fig
  • Please notice this domain name is unverified
  • We will be redirected to custom domain name page with DNS information as shown in below fig
  • Please save the DNS information, we will require it to configure /update DNS in domain registrar
Configure and manage custom domains – Azure Active Directory admin center – New domain TXT record - please save it since it requires to create a record in our domain registrar
fig : Configure and manage custom domains – Azure Active Directory admin center – New domain TXT record – please save it since it requires to create a record in our domain registrar
  • Once we have configured DNS or added respective record either TXT or MX in DNS registrar we could verify new domain in Azure AD.
  • Please navigate to new domain blade and click on “Verify” button as shown in below fig
Configure and manage custom domains – Azure Active Directory admin center – Verifying new domain in Azure AD
fig : Configure and manage custom domains – Azure Active Directory admin center – Verifying new domain in Azure AD
  • Once domain name is verified we can use that domain as Primary domain
  • This new domain name is now can be used for our Azure AD resources.
  • For example while creating new user we could see the drop-down having verified domain names and which we need to select.
  • Currently we will see only one domain in below drop-down since we didn’t verified our custom domain – knowledgejunction1.in
Configure and manage custom domains – Azure Active Directory admin center – selecting domain while creating new user
fig : Configure and manage custom domains – Azure Active Directory admin center – selecting domain while creating new user – currently it showing only one default domain since we didn’t verified our custom domain
  • We could add up to 900 custom domains
  • If we change the primary domain name, it didn’t get change the user names for existing users
  • We could add sub domains as well. Once root domain is verified we no need to verify subdomain. Azure AD automatically verifies sub domain

I’ll stop here. Will come back with next topic form syllabus 🙂

Next article : In next article we will discuss Configure and manage device registration
